Today was going to be the longest drive of my trip, at last eight hours from Guadalupe River State Park outside of San Antonio to Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Amarillo. Wanting an early start, I fed the dogs and packed everything up. I threw a plastic bag with two bagels in the car for my breakfast and stopped by the comfort station for a quick ten-minute shower. When I came back to the car, Madison had ripped open the bag and ate both bagels! For the next few hours, I kept expecting she would vomit all over the car, but that never happened.
There was almost no traffic heading to the northwest corner of Texas. I passed many farms and cattle ranches, and the only city I saw was Lubbock. With the lack of anything interesting on the way, I was not planning to post a blog – until I got to the campground. Everything up to that point was fairly flat, but the canyon is stunning. I posted three pictures of the canyon from the park’s visitor center overlook. The campground is down in the base of the canyon. I posted a picture of the amphitheater in the campground and a view of the canyon looking up from the camp. We took a two mile hike on one of the trails and then settled in for dinner and sleep.
