I left Mount Pleasant and headed south towards Savannah, Georgia. On the way into the city, I crossed a beautiful bridge almost exactly like the Charleston bridge. Both are very high bridges and are specifically designed to allow large cargo ships into their busy commercial harbors.
As charming as Charleston is, Savannah may be even more charming, and very much a southern city. Among the things I want to see on this trip are some of the most beautiful churches in the country, and the first one on my list is the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah. Unfortunately, the church exterior is under construction so the picture I posted was not the best, but I did include a couple of interior shots.
From there, I drove further south to my reserved campsite at Crooked River State Park. This was the first real camping experience on the trip; Walmart and Econo Lodge on the early days don’t count! It was a great campground with gorgeous views, large RV camp spots and great amenities – well worth the price. The dogs and I took a two-mile hike along the trail by the Crooked River. Since I missed out on camping in North Carolina, I luckily avoided bears. Crooked River had no bears, but I saw signs warning me of alligators and venomous snakes. Again, luckily, I saw none.
